TV capture video input/output pin

I'm using VLC as my TV together with Hauppauge PVR250, and trying to get VLC to capture the "Video preview" and "Audio preview" pins (unencoded video and audio).
However, VLC ignores any values I set as "Video input pin" and "Video output pin".
Has anyone done this?
I also get confused by the debug log saying "crossbar at depth 0, routed video output 5 to video input 0".
Routed ouput to input - from what to what?
