I try to open mms urls in Videolan and it play a few seconds (no more than 5 sec) of video and then freezes. I thought at first it had paused for buffering... but no. It never starts playing again. The only way to see the video again is to press stop, and play, so Videolan in fact re-connects to the server... and plays a few more seconds.


Its weird, cuz I am unable to play streaming video on my WMP too!! In fact, Windows Media Player wont even open the video... it simply gives me an error message that it cannot play the video!

Considering WMP is totally independent from VLC suggests other problems in your system or connection to the Internet.

Try doing a DirectX diagnostic.

Try doing Internet speed tests.

its not a internet speed problem.

also, it would be unrelated to the WMP problem, since WMP cant even begin to open the video.

As for DirectX, I run the diagnostics and apparently there is no problem (why would problems only appear on streaming video?)

Why are you so sure it's not a Internet speed problem?
Really this is quite common and revolves around, method of streaming, bitrate, resolution of the file and transcodeing method. Even congestion on the network plays a part here.

Considering that you are having problems in general (any player) the system does seem more likely in your case.

because the internet is fast and I did the tests dude...

average 54 kbytes/s in the test. (its an ADSL 600 kbits/s connection)

Ah! Yes! Slow no sync is common for ADSL

Where can I download 0.8.6 v2??

I only found 0.8.5 to download, and its the one Ive been using all the time.

tried 0.8.6, still the same problem.

Can anyone direct me to some good forum where maybe someone can help me, since this problem is apparently not relative ONLY to videolan (my WMP also cant run streaming videos)

Is it all streaming sites, or just certain ones? If the source is overloaded, nothing you can do will fix it (except streaming to a file and watching it later)

tried CN8. Same thing. Played 3 seconds. Stoped for a long time, than video closed.

I dont know what NAT is, but my modem IP is 192.168.0.1 and my PC is 192.168.0.2.

My computer IP on the internet (given by the service provider/phone company) I dont know.

Yes, you are behind a NAT. (You can thank the ADSL industry for totally breaking the internet).

During streaming, data needs to be exchanged over certain UDP ports. Many ADSL/Cable equipment with NAT enabled doesn't handle that very well.

Your options.
1: Get a better ADSL/NAT box
2: Do your own routing

@The DJ I'm not aware of any home type router (that does port forwarding) that will increment the port as there is no mechanism to do this. The only thing I am aware of is UpNP devices, but VLC would need to support this automatically (perhaps as an option) in order for it to work. I have seen several programs that do change the ports of a UpNP router through the UpNP command set. They even close the ports when the program closes.

So in my opinion, it would be smart to either stop incrementing the port, provide an option for the user and or implement the UpNP command set and also provide options for this function.

These types of modems are up or down and not both at the same time, as such there is no sync between the up and down flow of data. These types of modems also suffer from interruptions in streaming data to do a up or a down depending on the type of streaming.

Well, but doesnt EVERYONE has a modem router? Mine is a Speedstream 4200. I know how to port forward in it. Doesnt it helps? I mean, I can port forward for e-mule for example

Everybody I know who have ADSL have routers and they can play streaming video. Why cant I?

In fact, I could play streaming video with this very same router not so long ago. I guess it stoped playing in my last Windows install or when I installed some service pack.

1. Missing AGP or PCIe drivers. These are specific to your motherboard chipset and required for your video card to function properly.

2. Update your video and audio card drivers after installing SP2 or DirectX 9c as recommended by Microsoft.

3. Update DirectX runtime. This is updated every few months by Microsoft and is not automatic.

Do not install WMP 11 final as there are lots of problems associated for many players. Microsoft says it's looking into the issues. It has been about a month now with no new updates available.
