^^^ hints for the poll ^^^ :

1. Double-check efficiency, reliability, and security of XP&Wista before voting for 1
2. Double check to make sure that it works before voting for 2
3. Double check stability and reliability of ReactOS before voting for 3
4. Are you really sure ?

Windows 95/98/Me users: Please note that these versions of Windows are not officially supported. No VideoLAN developer uses any of these systems, which makes them hard to support. VLC should mostly work with them, but some incompatibilities might appear. You might need to download The Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Windows 95/98/Me Systems. The two MSLU files need to be put in the C:\Windows\System\ folder.
Please, do NOT drop Windows 98 before it REALLY IS obsolete.

Do not drop it before any of the following happens:

- VLC works in FreeDOS (preferrable)
- ReactOS becomes usable (at least as Win98) and not silly (like XP)
- M$ releases a usable version of Windows (don't think this will happen in next 1'000'000 years)

BTW: VLC works minimally in Win98SE for me, but there are some problems:

- Playing does not start for some files (??? same bug in XP)
- Crash in some situations
- Not really intuitive (design problem, not really a bug)
- Silly UNICOWS needed (works as supposed if followed manual)

Thanks for great work, but please do not push people to get XP crap ...

Try using 0.8.4 or 0.8.5a

Win9x version should not be dropped. However the Unicode support for MS Win9x is limited, because of M$. But you need Unicows. It is not a VLC problem, but a M$ one.

For your problems, try a 0.8.5 or a 0.8.6-test1 (that repaired some Unicode bugs). About design, well, 0.9.0 will gave a new one. Will it work on w9x ? Noone has tested yet.

I think allot of users would be real upset to see the older Windows operating system no longer supported by the VLC team.

I don't believe adding support for any other operating system will change this in the near future because of the nature of People. We are all creatures of habit and if it ain't broke don't fix it. While I have never been real fond of that statement we have all been caught with it. :)

use unicows.dll from openoffice.org 2.04 to make VLC 0.8.5 work in win98

All my pc's are win98 or linux or both. xp is too big and vunerable, and NT/2K/XP bassed OS having better memory management actually encourages poor programming of applications. If only M$ would add a usb storage support, ability to handle more than 722mb ram without a patch, and PCIExpress support update to win98...

USB from M$

Do you absolutely need an USB from M$ ?

Is this one not good enough

Yeah ... I had seen nicer download pages before ... but it does what it should.
