I have been searching for a solution for about 1.5hrs now, I've tried searching the forum, google and irc but I have had no luck so far.
So here I am, will provide screenshots so you can see my exact settings where they should matter (I think).

Unfortunately I am still seeing the pixelish font that comes with VLC, so what am I doing wrong?

Assuming your subtitles don't have any special layout, color or effects, does unchecking Formatted Subtitles help?

Can't see the second image as it's not there.
Try changing the font and size. But really this should not be a problem in vlc 0.8.5

Under Relative font size you have it as Large, does changing it to Normal help smoothing it out?

Sure, I could do that but then the font is far to small since its already kinda hard to read.
I should still be able to use VLC for subtitles though, as it is now I will need to use MPC when I need to view subtitles as the font doesnt treat my eyes very well.

Hmm! when I try large it is much bigger than MPC and takes up way to much of the screen. Are you sure we are talking about VLC 0.8.5 and not 0.8.4 as this was the one that was kinda hard to read without changing fonts.

Iam not quite sure about this, but it sounds like the original poster has the same problem as I do.
When I watch movies with .srt subtitles my subs fonts are smooth and easy to read. How ever when I use .idx & .sub subtitles the font is awful and hard to read. I have tried the same settings as in OP:s pictures but no go. Also changing the relative font size setting does not work with .idx & .sub files, it does how ever work with .srt subtitles.
Same issue or different?
edit:
I would post a screen shot of these subtitles, but when I take a screen shot the VLC appears black. Somekinda overlay issue I guess.

VOBSub takes on the characteristics embedded in the .idx file and changes to VLC does not effect these.

Yeah, am also using .idx and .sub files for this one havent tried .srt yet.

As Iam dumb in these matters I must ask, can I do something in VLC/.idx to make VOBSub subtitles look nicer with VLC or is this something that is going to be fixed in future versions of VLC?

Look Nicer?? The only thing I see between players (MPC or MPlayer) is font color which is not supported by VLC. Hmm! Come to think of it MPlayer doesn't either.
Solely depending on the video IE encoding format selected and resolution, fonts may become more or less sharp, but I find this true of any player.

Its like the fonts donĀ“t have any anti aliasing on them, which makes the fonts blocky and hard to read
I tryed out some other movies with .subs and there is definetly a quality difference between different movie/.sub combinations. So the VLC is not to blame
It would be sweet if we could force our own Fonts with .sub files as we can with .srt subtitles. Could this be possible in future versions of VLC?

You can use VLC's options for .sub (MicroDVD format) it's VOBSub that this is not possible (.idx+.sub) the information is held in the .idx file and this is the purpose for the .idx file.
But at least you have experienced the difference when the quality of the video is better
as this is what it is reliant on.

Thanks for taking the time to explain this. I did indeed wonder why plain .sub files seem to work ok and .idx+.sub did not. Case closed on my account
