Can VLC save a video to another format?

Greetings,

I have a few videos that can be played with VLC but resist to open by any other software that I have tried. As it would be useful to me to standarize video types in order to edit them, I would like to know if there is a way to save a video file (let's say is an AVI file with an Ogg format and a DivX 5 codec) to another format, (let's say compatible with a video editing software)?

Thanks

Yes its possible to save to another format using VLC.

Open your VLC player and hit CTRL+W or goto FILE->Wizard in the Menu.
Choose 'Transcode/Save to File'. Press Next.

Follow the wizard ,select the format & save the file.
