wher do u set the Resolution

It's hiding inside the header information for the file and you can't change the actual resolution as a playback function. Would you like to reword you question?

hmmm i can set the resolution in all the other players...but if vlc is running max. resolution for my system "auto" i dont care...just wonna make sure

@DJ: there is a difference between video resolution and display resolution. He probably means the latter.

With modern videocards and screensizes, it's absolutely useless to not make full use of the entire display resolution that is available. With older models, it can create better visual results, but it's a complicated and easily failing process to change the resolution of your screen. And the VLC devs don't see the use in spending there time on such a thing.

if i chance from 1024x768 to 1280x1024 will the pictur quality get better on my movies ?

It depends on the issue you are trying to resolve. If the present video resolution is giving problems due to insufficient video memory then lowering the video resolution may help the issue. You can also try lowering the color depth.

Actually I was trying to get him to describe his problem. But it seems he still refuses to do this. Rather he continues to ask kinda off the wall questions. I am well aware of the differences but I don't think this user is and according to the verbiage of the question there was no way it could be answered correctly.

On my Notebook i get a bad videoquality with 1280x800, but a much better quality with a display resolution of 1024x768

As was stated or at very least implied, your video card or desktop resolution can be changed, But a motion video files resolution can NOT be changed without transcoding the file.

Best is a matter of taste and what you hardware is capable of. There is an old adage "If it ain't broke don't fix it."
