Which video codec is used in the MP4 file?
If you press ctrl i or View, Stream and Media Information and then go to Advanced Information tab while playing a video, VLC should show you some info about the used video codec.

I'm not quite sure how referring this to the nightly builds is going to resolve the problem???
These formats are supported!
What is the extension of the file? I would assume filename.mp4 or filename.mkv
Are you having any problems with other file types?
If you have checked other file types and are not having problems, post the Messages file for the one you are having problems with.

H264 should be supported by vlc, but since the last vlc release (0.8.5) there was some improvements in FFmpeg(libavcodec) if I am not wrong. The nightly builds are not linked against a newer FFmpeg version, than vlc 0.8.5?

Every version is kept up to date with Matroska and H.264 as well as changes to x.264. In 0.8.5-final it has been my understanding that H.264 was still done by the VideoLAN team. But shortly after this release the BBC started broadcast tests using MBAFF Interlacing with H.264 and at the request of users, FFmpeg was faster to respond to the change. So VLC was compiled using the FFmpeg version and called VLC 0.8.5-freehd.
Living in the USA I have not come across any samples to prove it works even though I have looked for them.
Sense then a number of hardware vendors have shown up using PAFF interlacing, but to date there has been no further response.

MBAFF support
PAFF interlacing is not supported

VLC NEVER worked on h264 decoders. we have always used the ffmpeg version.
The freeHD version is only there for the customers of the company Free, who needed an updated version of VLC right away to view some of the MBAFF streams. All nightly builds for VLC OSX (possibly not windows) should have the functionality as well.

Sorry to say that this has not been the story from some of the rest of the developers and have been called on this one before. Yet when I have checked messages FFmpeg has always been the handler. But out of consideration I have given the benefit of the doubt about earlier versions. This does not negate the general accuracy of the statement that implies that the only changes that have been made to h.264 decoding since the release of 0.8.5-final was to support MBAFF interlacing. Your statement about the company Free is also misleading.

Are you sure it is a video ?
Because then you should have a Stream 2 Type: Video...

Hmm! Normally the video shows up as stream 0. So my guess is that the encoding never happened and who ever made this did not check there work.

Open your Task Manager and look at CPU usage. Also looking at messages may be helpful to see what the problem might be. If the file is interlaced it may not play.
