i wanted to know if there was a way to adjust vlc to not have to open a separate vlc window for every file i open and to open in the same window i opened the last media file in? thanks for any help in advance

Sure, go to Preferences -> Advanced -> check Advanced options -> check "Allow only one running instance"
Click on Save
