0.8.4a able to re-stream multicast/dshow 0.8.5 can't

Background:

My TV is delivered over DSL via joining multicast streams with a settop box

inserting a hub between the modem and the STB enables me to have a PC in the loop, and join the multicast channels manually with VLC. I can then take that stream, and redirect anywhere in my network with VLC

I've been using 0.8.4a for a few months now, and it's worked great. the http interface is a bit weaksauce, but it works

Just upgraded to the new 0.8.5 and can no longer join mulitcast streams with the PVRbox! I can bring in the video via the capture card, but I can't stream that output to my network

the PVRbox has 2 hard drives

0.8.4a loaded on 1, and 0.8.5 loaded on the other, all settings are identical

I can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong, or what would have changed

ideas?
(pvrbox is a p3 933, 320 ram, winxp pro)

oh

I should add, that this is only on the PVRbox/streamer

the box that's tapping into the resulting UDP stream can use either 0.8.4a or 0.8.5

any ideas?

0.8.4a can join the TV multistream
0.8.5 cannot join the TV multistream

0.8.4a as well as 0.8.5 can join the udp stream from the pvrbox running 0.8.4a

We have been told that APIs continue to change through the versions of VLC. I have been tracking this for a while now. The last major API change occurred 1/16/06 so the build dated 1/15/06 (0.8.5) was pre change. It would be nice to know if this problem is related to the API change or is another problem that has crept in. The developers seem to agree that the API changes is when most problems creep in that need to be resolved. Most but not all of the changes had been completed for 0.8.5 by 1/15/06 and a few bugs crept into 0.8.5 final that are just now showing up. As you are probably aware, VLC is ongoing and is compiled daily. Bug fixes are taken care of as time permits any of the developers for finding them and resolving them. As of the time of this writing there is no trouble ticket on your noted problem and would require confirmation by another Windows user. As your usage is rather unique this may not be easily accomplished by another user.
