no Log file

I can't seem to get VLC for windows (precompiled 0.8.5) to write the log file. I have tried both text and HTML files using both the preferences menu and the command line --logfile options.
Incedentally, commands like "vlc --list --vvv" don't appear to do anything either.
Any ideas?
