This has become very common for either ported packages or single source packages for multiple operating systems. Think iTunes!

Hmm. I really don't wanna think iTunes. I detest the package... Strange, that, since I'm experimenting with MozDev's SongBird package -- an attempted fusion of iTunes and WinAmp.

However, in the spirit of RealPlaything, Windoze Media Plaything or WinAmp, or even notsoQuicktime; it might be rather nice to be able to change MIME types or file associations on the fly. It'd go a long way towards alleviating many of the file association frustrations I see in this forum -- including a few that I've experienced: I had to completely remove VLC from my system, including the registry, and reload it before it would acknowledge .mp4 as a valid VLC media file...

Cheers!

The developers always seem more than willing to accept contributions or donations. This can be in the way of code if you are good at that kind of thing or MONEY. I tend to believe that this is the only way what you suggest will happen.

Given that VLC is a single source code for all operating systems, you should be able to see the problem here.

Yeah... I can see the problem. I note, however, the RealPlaything is designed and built for Windoze, has free versions, and will also run over the Linspire Linux platform. But it has functions to allow file association changes on the fly - or, with only restart of the application, rather then a re-install...

How much money do you think they'd want? I really not that great an app programmer...
