Subtitles do not appear

I'm trying to watch a movie on the VLC player.
I have the latest version of VLC and everything but for some reason the subtitles won't show up at all.
At first I thought something was wrong with the subtitle file for some reason but my friend who has the same exact movie, same subtitle file, has no problem when he plays it on his VLC player. He tried resending the movie and the subtitle files. He even tried loading it on my player the exact same way that he does and it didn't work still.
The subtitle file was placed in the same folder as the movie, I went to subtitle preferences, selected autodetect and everything but still nothing.
The only difference I could find was that my friend has an older version of VLC media player.
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? Some help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

In auto detect mode the sub must be in the same directory and carry the same name as the video or so fussy mode says close.
If the sub doesn't not show up try calling the sub directly form the same menu.
Have you tried right clicking on the player while watching the video, if the subtitle option shows up the sub as been loaded, but the options in Preferences are not set to automatically display it so just select the language and enjoy.

Hi,
I've got a similar problem.
Before I uptaded VLC everything works good. But with the latest version, when I want to see a video with subtitles (often a .srt file) a lot of subtitles don't appear but I can see some of them.
I thought that the srt files were corrupted but whith an other viewer (BSplayer) everything works.
I uninstall the 0.8.5 version and reinstall an older version and the problem persists. Is there a ghost in my computer that eat my subtitles sometimes?
Sorry for my english

I want to add a note to my last reply: my current version is vlc-0.8.5-win32 and when I play the movie VLC recognizes the sub but it simply doesn't appear...
my previous version where everything worked fine: vc-0.8.4a-win32

I've found an answer with this topic :

For french people (and some other country) we must change the iso encryption : use the ISO-8859-1 and then all the accuentuated letters will appear.
The default encryption will not (apparently) support these letters in the latest version of vlc

Check that Autodetect is on
and
check subtitle track 1
during playback.

The autodetect is on by default and sets up the conditions I described in my first post.
If you want subs to show up after loading them without having to right click on the player. Set the option in Preferences, Input / Codecs, General "Subtitles track" You will need to find your language.

Hey friends.. I'm having a few problems with my subtitles.
1) Subtitles .SRT were not appearing... or written wrong. Solved that by changing the SUBTITLES TEXT ENCODING for VISCII.
2) The subtitle neds to be selected manually EVERYTIME I open VLC. I need to right click on the screen and select SUBTITLE TRACK. I wasn't able to fix this problem so far. Need help on it.
3) When I open VLC from windows MENU everything works if I select the subtitle manually. But If I open VLC by double clicking on a video file, the option SUBTITLE TRACK VANISHES, disappears completly.
I don't know how to fix problems 2) and 3). Can any of you guys help with that?
