Sorry but i'm new to this, Is it possoble to convert the file so that i can open it in window media player or movie maker?

sorry but your question is not really precise...
Which kind of file do you want to convert ? If VLC is able to read it then you can convert it to another format with the transcoding feature of VLC (see http://wiki.videolan.org/index.php/Transcode)

too bad the subtitles can't be extracted, i really miss that option...
