Player stops

When I move the ticker the player stops at least 80% of the time. I play AVI, VOB and MPG and it happens to all of them. I've used VLC (current version) for over a year and have never figured it out.

These are some messages I had:

cture to display 01168018 has invalid status 6
main error: picture 01168018 refcount is -1
main warning: resampling stopped after 5119834 usec
main warning: buffer is 117349 in advance, triggering downsampling
main warning: resampling stopped after 8486841 usec

The slider bar, ticker, whatever you want to call it. Use your imagination. The needle that ticks the time off.

While I can't say I have experienced your problem with the Progress Bar, the current version on the web site is only a few months old. There have been many updates that are available in the Nightly Builds. http://nightlies.videolan.org/ Pick the 9.1 meg file, as it is the install version. Don't forget to uninstall the old version using your Control Panel's add/remove programs first.

Yes, videolan does lock up very often when you move the slider bar. In fact, it locks up on me about 100% of the time whenever I play ANY video. Although I love this media player and the features it offers, it gets pretty annoying. I constantly update versions of VLC - this seems to be a common problem with ALL versions.

P.S. My computer is a Dell Dimension 3000 P4 3.0 GHz computer with 512 MB of DDR memory. It comes with a Intel Accelerated Video Card and on-board sound card. So, I don't think speed is the issue...

I would like to add something to this earlier entry. I just downloaded the latest nightly build and installed it. The same problems occurs, EXCEPT it says: "This AVI file is broken. Seeking will not work correctly. Do you want to try to repair it (this might take a long time)?" If I repair it, the video runs and tracks perfectly. If I don't repair it, the video tracking does not work (In fact, the progress bar does not show at all).

Yes, the video runs flawlessly in Windows Media Player - without having to change anything. This new error message is helpful (might help me with digital video editing), but VideoLan should find a workaround (HINT: Windows Media Player seems to have developed a workaround).

VLC is a packet based player that that adheres to the specification of the file type and container. If the index is bad or if the interleave of the file is incorrect the file can NOT be streamed properly. What you are suggesting is an encode problem or corrupted file problem and VLC will not and can not play these properly and also stream. So if you think you have a better solution, bring it on. Or download the code and dig in, suggestions and updates are always welcomed!

Progress bar problems is generally an indication of poorly encoded files, generally interleaving is the problem. There is general discussions by almost every author of Direct Show filter ever created regarding searching within a file with poor interleaving. I'm not saying this can be the only problem with seeking and the progress bar but it is the most common problem.
