Assertion failure: VLC media player ARM nightly builds not opening on PC
Posted: 20 Aug 2024 00:31
Hello, I've searched for this error both here and in Google, but haven't found anything helpful. I cannot get VLC to run on my laptop. If I open the VLC app itself, a blank window opens, then closes after a few seconds. If I try to play a video file, I get a pop up that says the following:
Assertion failed!
Program: ...(x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins\gui\libqt_plugin.dll
File: /builds/videolan/vlc/extras/package.../composi...omp.cpp
Line: 309
Expression: m_dcompDevice
For information on how your program can cause an assertion failure, see the Visual C++ documentation on asserts
(press retry to debug the application - JIT must be enabled)
The windows closes quickly, but even when trying to press retry, it appears to do nothing but close the window anyway.
Model: Surface Laptop 7
Windows version: Windows 11 ARM 24H2 (OS Build 26100.1457)
Versions of VLC tried: Several. They've all come from the ARM repo, and only nightly builds appear to be available for Windows on ARM. Tried the two latest, tried one from July. Newest one tried was vlc-4.0.0-dev-win64-f697fef5
I Googled m_dcompDevice and assertion failure, which led me to installing the latest Visual C++ redistributable ARM version that's available. The laptop is up to date with both Windows updates and drivers. I've tried repairing, un/reinstalling, resetting settings and cache, but nothing will get it to work. I can't toggle things like hardware acceleration, as I cannot open the GUI.
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
