Why do anime subs do this only when played on VLC? They appear normally when played through windows films and tv app.

Because there's a bug. Use another VLC version

I'm using the latest version...

Edit: Ok so it turns out I was using 3.0.20 instead of 3.0.21. However when using the "check for updates" feature, no updates were found. Had to download and install it manually. After upgrading to 3.0.21, the subs now show normally. Weird.
