How to control audio with mouse wheel playing music

I remember being able to control audio in VLC using my mouse wheel when playing a mp3 file; I can only do that now with videos. I am using the latest 64 bit version, what happened?

It should work if the VLC GUI has focus.

That is more advanced than I can understand...I don't know what that is...

That means it should work if the VLC window is actually the active one in front of any other windows.

It is, but it doesn't. I've been using VLC since 2002...

It works for me, the default setting is the volume control.

If my post was about who does VLC volume control work for, your post would be relevant; however, as I stated, it DOESN'T work here. I am trying to find out why, not take a survey of who it does work for.

Back to the default settings then, which are the working ones:
First, reboot your computer, then reset the preferences and cache (the manual way) and try again:

Well, that worked for my backup old laptop, but not for my main one.
And then...after trying reset Prefs another time, I then went to Playlist and unchecked the image choice...annnd it now responds to my mouse wheel for volume.
