Some DVDs open to title menu, some play audio but show no menu

Postby tbessie » 01 Apr 2024 08:22

So I've been playing back my collection of Buffy the Vampire Slayer DVDs ("The Chosen Collection").

When I open it from the DVD drive of a computer of mine, it works fine.

However, using a new DVD drive (an ASUS Blu-Ray drive) in another computer, every disc (so far) opens either on the first TITLE menu (not on the DVD menu, nor does it show the FBI warnings, etc), or it plays the audio from the first title menu, but doesn't show any video at all.

When I try playing these same discs with PowerDVD (v. 22), they play perfectly - they play the FBI warnings, then go to the main disc menu.

I've cleared all cached settings, but it still happens.

I don't seem to recall this having happened in the past.

Any idea what might be causing this?

Try this:
Tools -> Preferences -> Show settings: ALL
Input codecs -> Access modules -> DVD with menus
Untick the option "Start directly in menu".
Save the preferences then exit and restart VLC.

Try this:
Tools -> Preferences -> Show settings: ALL
Input codecs -> Access modules -> DVD with menus
Untick the option "Start directly in menu".
Save the preferences then exit and restart VLC.

Aha! That seems to have fixed all the problems (going to the first TITLE menu, or not showing any video).

Looks like this feature could use some work in it knowing which clips and menus are which.

It looks like this issue has been brought up for many years (I did a search for the feature and its history).
Any idea why it works so imperfectly (or why it's enabled by default, if it doesn't always work well)?
