Batch converting MTS to MP4 and preserving audio

Hello all,
I have a question I'm wondering if someone more experienced with VLC could answer:
I have several hundred short videos with audio in MTS format (typical length ~1 min) which I would like to convert to MP4 in the easiest/batch way possible, preserving the audio track.
I have tried converting files using many of the options in VLC's dropdown, e.g h.2.64 + mp3 (mp4), video for Youtube, etc, but none of these are preserving the audio from the MTS videos. I've been able to successfully create an MP4 video from an MTS, but it's always silent. I also haven't yet found a way to convert these in bulk. Ideally, I'd like to preserve metadata (e.g. timestamp of date video originally taken) if possible during the conversion.
Would you be able to provide any insight on a trick I'm missing here?
Many thanks!
Ian
