5.1 YouTube Support

Postby dts350z » 02 Feb 2023 17:15

YouTube recently started supporting 5.1 Audio in AAC LC.

When using a downloader, these mp4 /m4a files play fine in VLC, however, even after doing this (to get the Youtube links to stream) https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 26#p483226 , I only get stereo.

Is there a preference or another change to the youtube.luac file needed?

Example 5.1 on YouTube:

Info here seems to indicate we want Dolby encodings (although AAC 5.1 is there and would be higher quality IMHO): https://techcrunch.com/2022/06/08/youtu ... d-tv-roku/

And, speaking of dolby, I guess I should point out that there 2 playback configs that should be supported:

1) decode locally for playback in windows via windows sound (5.1)

2) bitstream over hdmi to an AVR or TV that supports Dolby decoding (or AAC LC???).

Yes, there are three 5.1 audio streams available: format ID 380 is AC-3, 328 is E-AC-3 and 258 is AAC.
But I had to use the help of PhantomJS to get them.

Yes, it looks like the youtube.lua script needs a serious update and maybe the help of some new components.

How do we make that happen?

We just wait for the devs or some skilled volunteer(s) to update the LUA script.

Meanwhile, there is this batch file as a workaround:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 15#p495615

You have to replace youtube-dl.exe with yt-dlp.exe and to set the correct path to VLC.exe.

Does anyone know where those Audio format IDs (my term) come from?

I see examples where formats with same number of channels and channel order have different IDs, and also examples where a completely different codec has the same ID?

e.g. m4a ids 256 and 258 have the same channel layout (per mediainfo), and there is also a several other codecs with id 258 (m48, mp3, aac, wav, and flac)
