WMV will play, but cannot be converted

I'm seeing a problem that I have not seen mentioned here before.

I have a WMV file which apparently is encoded in an old interlacing scheme. I've seen people say they can't play files like this with VLC.

My problem is, the file DOES play through VLC: but VLC will not convert the file to a different format. All attempts result in a VLC crash.

I've never seen this problem with VLC: or, for that matter, any other video processing software. If it can play, it can be converted.

There are problems with this format being 'unsupported' (typical of Microsoft). Avidemux, VirtualDub, Any Video Converter, HandBrake, and ffmpeg will not even read the video. But VLC does read and playback the video with no problems.

Any suggestions on what might be happening, and is there a way to save this video in another format? I'm thinking of maybe playing it back and doing a screen or desktop capture, but I'd prefer to convert it with VLC.

I'm running VLC 3.0.18 Vetinari and K-Lite Codec Pack 17.3.4 Mega.

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com or on Justpaste.it if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of your original problematic file to Zippyshare.com or to WeTransfer.com and then post the link to the file here.

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:

200 MB max should be enough.
