How do I prevent Auto Update?

Postby [bexier] » 17 Aug 2022 20:54

I've searched high and low. I've tweaked my prefs for the only "update" feature people seem to talk about (which is only for a notifier). I've set up firewalls to prevent VLC from downloading anything - yet somehow the application continues to update - all on it's own without my permission.

Version 3.0.9 seems to be the last version of VLC to play nice with ProRes. (please no comments on using that codec - it's a company decision) After that the codec just stops playing.

I have to uninstall the (auto) update and reinstall the 3.0.9 about every couple of weeks.

I need VLC to completely stop auto updating.

VLC doesn't automatically update itself. Either don't accept when it offers to update, or turn off the update check from preferences.

If it still gets updated, then that must be the makings of another tool, presumably by your corporate IT policies.

I haven't accepted an update and the update check from prefs is off. I'll check with IT. Thanks for the reply.

One of my artists (Kraig) had Admin privileges removed and the update problem stopped for him. (at least for now)

This is from my IT Department:
No idea, but check with that developer on the forum and see if he thinks it could be as simple as Having Admin vs Not Having Admin
If Kraig being an admin makes a difference, then it’s something at the user level that’s doing the update.

Pass this link on to your system adminstrator: https://www.videolan.org/security/

It might induce them to upgrade to the latest version.

Thanks. I understand.

But if the newer versions can't play Prores, then we are stuck. (unless of course the Prores problem can be addressed in VLC - but that's a different thread  )

My point was that VLC itself won't automatically update without prompt, but some third-party configuration management tools do.

Of course if another user is updating the same installation then that's that.
