high bitrate dolby atmos: audio skipping

Postby sprintcamel » 10 Nov 2021 21:09

i am still having a problem with certain movies where the dolby atmos audio will drop or skip. two movies where this problem is 100% reproducible are Free Guy & Frozen 2 (specifically the 4k UHD disks/remuxes with dolby atmos audio). i have searched for this problem extensively and other people appear to be having the same issue with different media players. apparently the culprit is from the high bitrate audio? i searched this forum but could not find others having the same problem. i love vlc but this problem seems to be happening more frequently now and i first noticed it well over a year ago. curious if others have experienced the same issue or know of a fix for it.

edit - specifically when the problem happens, all audio will drop or skip, not just the overhead atmos speakers.

also, this was the most detailed article i could find with users having the same problems with the above mentioned movies, however not specific to VLC. it would appear that VLC has the same problem happening though. https://discourse.coreelec.org/t/truehd ... -rate/7569

Erm, if it's not specific to VLC what do you expect ?

hoping for a fix? not sure exactly why it's happening but it shouldn't be. the fact that it's reproducible with certain movies is alarming. it would appear the player isn't capable of decoding the atmos audio correctly which is causing the skipping & drop in audio.

If it's not specific to VLC then it's a system issue. VLC will not fix system issues.

I had the same problem only VLC actually crashes BUT "Windows Movies and TV" runs MKV's with Atmos just fine. Windows uses a "Dolby Access" app for headphones and YouTube and my receiver shows Atmos when running the demos. Perhaps the Dolby Atmos for Windows interferes with VLC for some. I'm not messing with my setup anymore. A while ago "Windows Movies and TV" wasn't good for much but now it is outstanding, I have had trouble in the past with both VLC and "Windows and Movies and TV" but maybe the Dolby Access interferes with VLC. Since I doubt everyone has Dolby Access from Microsoft or has the Microsoft video player, it must be something else. I have an Intel NUC with an AMD video/sound source attached directly to the Intel CPU as a single unit. The HDMI goes from my computer to a Yamaha receiver and from there to my 4K TV. BTW the sound is Blu Ray quality with Atmos in True HD indicated on my receiver.
