Playback of more than 4-5 MIDI files crashes VLC

I have VLC configured as the default MIDI player on my computer. Thus, double-clicking a MIDI file will play it in VLC.
When I open more than five MIDI files (or run the same MIDI file more than five times), VLC crashes.
Versions: 3.0.11; 3.0.16
How do I fix this? Is this specific to me or can someone else replicate it?
Couldn't find another instance of similar behaviour anywhere else.
