decompressing vlc source files

the vlc source is compressed with .tar.tar suffix. how do i decompress such files?

The tar.tar is your OS or browser which do silly stuff.
The sources are tar.gz or tar.bz2. Winamp supoprts tar.gz afaik.

If you have cygwin you have bunzip and gunzip

Almost any .zip software should be able to handle the .tar.gz files - if you don't have any zip software then http://www.filzip.com is avaliable for free.
