Specific MP3 track, VLC always shows wrong cover

I use VLC as my default player for MP3s and I use "MP3tag" to add an image to the track that shows on the screen when I play the MP3. The images are just jpegs that I choose to represent the individual track and make visual recognition easier. I have done this many many times and it works fine ... usually.
However, I have one track where I decided to change the image having already played it in VLC with the old image. Having changed the image to a new one, VLC consistently shows the old image no matter what I do. These are the things I have tried:
(1) Initially I opened the MP3 track in the tagging software, deleted the image and added a new one - VLC still used the old image
(2) I then deleted the MP3 track completely, remade it using the same title as previously, added the new image - VLC still used the old image
(3) I then tried renaming the track to see if this made a difference on the basis that VLC had not "seen" the renamed track before. Notwithstanding, VLC still used the old image
It seems strange behaviour. I do not have a great deal of knowledge when it comes to using VLC but feel there must be an answer. I wonder if anyone is able to point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.
Edit - I have now found that it relates to the "title" given to the MP3 in MP3tag. Changing the file name is irrelevant. If I go into MP3tag and change the title of the MP3 (regardless of what it is called as a file on my computer) then VLC will play it with the new image. It would seem that VLC is holding the original metadata, so when I play the MP3 it calls up the old image. I am not a techie person but that is what appears to be happening. I suppose the issue is how do you clear the metadat from VLC?
