I have an .AVI file that plays nicely in Windows Media Player but not in VLC. All I see is the VLC logo. VLC is going through the file but does not display the contents. Any thoughts?

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2)
before you start the playback, and then paste the
full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.
Also upload a short sample of your
original problematic file to Zippyshare.com or to WeTransfer.com and then post the link to the file here.

https://wetransfer.com
If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 35#p193335
200 MB max should be enough.

Here is the contents of the Message Log. The file is "Saturn_Bin1.avi on ZippyShare
File Link on ZippyShare:

Log was too large. I posted it on Pastebin (

Your file:
Code: Select all
Format : RGB
Codec ID : 0x00000000
Codec ID/Info : Basic Windows bitmap format. 1, 4 and 8 bpp versions are palettised. 16, 24 and 32bpp contain raw RGB samples
Bit rate : 17.5 Mb/s
Width : 320 pixels
Height : 240 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 4:3
Frame rate : 28.550 FPS
Bit depth : 8 bits
But VLC detects a 320 x 4294967056 resolution
You should create a new ticket on the VLC Trac with your above report, the links to your sample and log files and the link to this thread:

I found the issue. These .AVI files are astronomy image videos and contain Bayer patterns. Apparently VLC does not like this. It runs through the file but does not display anything. In viewing them in Windows Media Player, I could see the obvious Bayer pattern grid. I need to convert it to a normal .AVI file without the Bayer pattern first, then VLC is ok with it.
