Update Windows 10 from 1909 to 2004, all VLC versions crash on opening

I just updated Windows 10 Pro from 1909 to 2004. I was on VLC 3.0.13 without any problems on 1909. I delayed the update about as long as I could so that's why I'm just now going to 2004.

On 2004, VLC wouldn't even open. I got the "Ooops: VLC Media player just crashed" window. So there's no way for me to get into VLC and make any changes.

So I downloaded 3.0.14, installed it and I still got the error. I found a post about 3.0.15 so I downloaded that, 32 bit version, and VLC still shows the crash error and won't open. Btw, I did uninstall each previous version before installing the new one. I was doing the installs from the %TEMP% folder, although I don't know why that would matter but I was doing what was suggested in posts I had seen.

I have an Nvidia GTX 1060, 3GB. Driver 456.71

I'm about ready to go back to 1909, darn it I want VLC to work. Anyone else with this issue?

Joe

First of all reboot the computer. This in itself will often fixes the problem.

But go to https://www.videolan.org/ and download a fresh copy of 3.0.14 and then right click the exe file and click "Run As Administrator".

Incidentally, there's a company called 0Patch which now supports Windows 1909 and provides micropatches to address security vulnerabilities in Windows versions which are no longer supported by Microsoft. More details at

I was rebooting after each install with the same results. I even had a copy of 3.0.11 that I had tried.

However, on a hunch, I tried opening the 3.0.15 32 bit version (it was still installed) in Sandboxie and it opened! When I exited Sandboxie, VLC still opened. Who knows what hiccup got fixed by doing that but I will still test things out.

I have a copy of 3.0.14 so I will go ahead and install 3.0.14 and see how that performs.

I had the same issue. I deinstalled (including settings and cache) and cleaned up with iobit uninstall afterwards. Then installed as admin and it works now.
