fast forward sticks

I scan a lot of video, mostly mp4, and before the windows update on the 13th I didn't have any issues. But since the update, fast forwarding sticks, it's almost like what happens with a buffer when streaming. Sometimes it just a second or so, other times the video freezes up for 10-20 seconds. Anyone else having this issue, and if so, how can I fix it?

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of your original problematic file to Zippyshare.com or to WeTransfer.com and then post the link to the file here.

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:

100 MB max should be enough.

You can also upload a working file so we can compare them.

I have also experienced this. Downgrading to 3.0.12 solves the issue.

Most of the files are 'standard' MP4 files (H264 MPEG4 AVC part10 avc1 with AAC audio).

Also when skipping a lot (ctrl+arrow right several times per second) in the newer versions, after hanging it may go back to an earlier position and continue playback from there.

Hello everyone. After upgrading to 3.0.14 I started having a problem which seems as the same one OP is having, so I'm replying here.

In 3.0.14, when I continuously hold the "backward jump" or "forward jump" hotkeys, after a few seconds VLC starts to slightly jump around the seekbar, the video starts stuttering and the picture is not updating continuously during the seek. Additionaly, sometimes during the seek or after releasing the keys, it takes a couple of seconds for VLC to "settle", i.e. the video is shortly freezed, you can't seek anymore and obviously video/audio is freezed.

It's the same with "very short", "short", "medium", "long" jumps, but for reference, I use: 1, 5, 20, 60 seconds respectively.

I've tried:
1) Multiple downgrades to 3.0.12 and upgrades back to 3.0.14
2) Upgrading to the newest graphics card driver (466.27 win10 64bit dch-whql)
3) Multiple different videos - x264, x265; 720p, 1080p, 4K

What happens:
No matter the combination (VLC version / Driver / Video), the result is always the same - 3.0.12 seeks just fine while 3.0.14 is having problems.

My PC:
Win 10 x64, updated regularly
Also using x64 versions of VLC
Intel i7 4790k
nVidia 1080 Ti
16GB RAM
Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD (x2) + 860 EVO 1TB

I'm attaching:
Screen recordings of the issue and the corresponding "Messages" log output (with verbosity set to 2-debug). One video+log is for 3.0.12 and the other one for 3.0.14, but I've done the exact same thing in both videos to make them comparable if possible. Note: videos were recorded before I updated my graphics card drivers, but the exact same thing happens even after the update.

Here is the short rundown:

0:00-0:05 - Loading the video...
0:05-0:20 - Continuously holding "short forward jump". Not tapping, not any other keys, just holding "Ctrl + ->" the whole time. As you can see, 3.0.12 is smooth and at the end (when I let go of the keys), the video immediately resumes very smoothly. On the other hand, in 3.0.14 we have the seek bar jumping back and forth during the seek, and when I stop the seek, at exactly 0:20 (you can see the seekbar time stop changing at video time 17:07), it first jumps back to 14:42 and then back to 17:07 and then continues playing. Note: even though I was seeking roughly the same time (~15 sec), on 3.0.12 I managed to skip to rougly 34 minute into the video, while on 3.0.14 only half that amount.
0:20-0:30 - I let the video settle and manually (mouse click) jump back to video beginning.
0:30-0:40 - Same as before but now with "medium forward jump". Here I actually reach the end of the video with 3.0.12 at 0:37. With 3.0.14, I end the seek at 0:40 which again causes it to jump back and forward again before settling.

I can confirm that switching video output from Automatic to Direct3D 9 resolve the issue.
works as it should again.

SOLVED

I had to disable Fast Seek in the Input/Codecs -> Playback control section (or under Codecs in simple mode) and restart VLC; otherwise, it would often fail to skip forward 10 seconds.

Tried everything else mentioned here & elsewhere. Turning off Fast Seek, counterintuitively, fixed it. THANKS!
