My VLC is locked in full screen. I do not want full screen all the time. I clicked on Tools/preferences/ and unchecked full screen to no avail. clicking the escape key does not get out of full screen

If you make changes to vlc it's necessary to save, exit and restart.

If that fails to fix the problem reset prefs and then check again: https://wiki.videolan.org/VSG:ResetPrefs
