No audio when recording streamed video

Postby dsscottage » 26 Apr 2021 19:23

I’m getting no audio when I record streaming video using VLC.

Here’s what I’m using:
-VLC 3.0.12
-Win 10 Pro X64 (fully updated)

This is my process:
-Media
-Convert/Save
-Capture Device
-Capture Mode – Desktop
-Frame Rate – 30
-Convert/Save
-Settings – Video – H.264 + MP3(MP4)
-select my destination file
-Start

Alternatives:
I tried to edit the Audio Codecs in the profile but still get no audio
I tried a couple of other video settings with the same result

The result:
VLC does a good job of recording the streaming video but there is no audio in the output container.

When I look at the output with Mediainfo, there is no audio listed.

Can anyone help me with what I’m doing wrong?

Is the source youtube? If so, just download the video to your own machine and then extract the audio from there.

Steps to take:
  1. Copy the youtube link and hit Ctrl + N and paste it into the Network field on vlc.
  2. As soon as the video starts playing hit Ctrl + J to open the Codec Information.
  3. At the bottom of that window you'll see the Location field. Right click somewhere in that field and click Select All followed by right click --> Copy.
  4. Open your favorite browser and paste the link you just copied and hit Enter. It'll open the video directly on youtube's servers.
  5. Click File ---> Save Page As. The file will automatically acquire the name videoplayback.mp4
  6. Either rename it directly, or download it in its default state and then rename it afterwards. It'll download to the Downloads folder by default so choose another location if you wish.
Once you have the video on your system you can extract the audio and discard the rest.

Hitchhicker,
Thank you for your response.
I probably should have been more specific. (I've been working on this for 2 days and didn't want to bore anyone with all the details)
I'm attempting to record a program from a web site that streams their programming - (VH1).
As I've been trouble shooting, I've been streaming a YouTube video because it's a little easier to stream YouTube.
I'm getting the same result (no audio) on all attempts (YouTube & VH1).
If I only wanted to download a YouTube video, I have 4K Video Downloader and it works very well.

I first attempted to record the video stream using a program called Debut Video Capture. I got video and sound but the video was terrible. A web search informed me that VLC could do the job. VLC is giving me good video quality but no audio. I want the entire stream recorded (video and audio).

When I look at the VLC recorded file in Mediainfo, there is no audio in the container.

Searching the web, I read that someone else had the same problem and resolved it by downgrading to version 2 of VLC. I tried that but still didn't get audio in the recorded container.

That's a different story. I'm afraid you're out of luck there since vlc Capture using Desktop mode will only record the screen, not the audio.
