Subtitles appear stretched?

Subtitles appear stretched in VLC for me but not in MPV. I took screenshots of the same frame in each media player to compare them.

Any idea of why this is and how to fix it? From searching the forum here, I found someone else describing a similar issue, and they suspected it was because the movie they were watching was a 1080p movie cropped to remove the black bars at the top and bottom, making the video's resolution around 1920x800 rather than 1920x1080. They didn't describe any way of resolving the issue, however. Here's a link to the thread:
