Open Windows Run command (Windows key + R), copy / paste the following path and click OK: C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\playlist
What it the date of the youtube.luac file? If you can't see the date right click a blank space and go to View --> Details.

It's possible that the youtube.luac file is too old and you need to create a new one using the code on the Github site. Youtube often changes its code whereby a given video won't play anymore in vlc. As can be seen from
here the latest youtube.luac file is dated November 12.
But to be sure can you play the video in vlc without trying to force it to a lower resolution?

Hi, it is not clear how I create a new youtube.luac file from the Github site. The lua/README.txt "instructions" are not followable.
As for YouTube videos, they will play in VLC without trying to force the lower resolution, but the playback is not smooth enough to watch, there is some lagging and skipping etc. The actual YouTube site is entirely unusable due to the terrible performance of this device.

Instructions to create the youtube.luac file in this post:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 26#p483226
But if you can play videos albeit with stuttering the luac file is unlikely to fix the problem which sounds like a driver problem to me. Are you running Windows 10 or a different version? Which graphics driver version are you running?
If the PC is a laptop is there a label which reads NVIDIA OPTIMUS next to the keyboard?

Followed the instructions to create and replace the youtube.luac, but the videos still are not playing at 240p.
The device is running Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 (32-bit). The graphics are Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 500, driver verison 7.14.10.1006 (The only one I found that installed correctly). There is no Nvidia Optimus label.

Go to this
Intel site and click the link under the heading IDENTIFY MY PRODUCT which is the first one in the list.
If necessary change it to Windows Vista via the dropdown menu under "Method Two". It may be the case that the system is loading the basic Windows drivers in which case you should remove them in Device Manager and then without rebooting install the appropriate driver which you can download from the same Intel site.
To reach Device Manager open Windows Run command (Windows key + R) and type:
devmgmt.msc and click OK.

The only driver Intel provide is for Windows 7 32 bit machines, and it does not work on Vista from having tried it before. The driver that is currently installed is definitely working, the device manager correctly identifies it as the graphics driver, and there is an Intel control panel in the tray that lets me change between resolutions.

Uninstall the graphics driver you have now and install
this version which is the latest version approved for your hardware.
I suggest downloading Wagnard's
Display Driver Uninstaller to remove all trace of the drivers you have installed now before installing the above mentioned version.

Hi Hitchhicker, that driver does not work on Vista. I have already tried when there was no Intel drivers installed on the machine.

I'm sorry, but if you're not willing to try the steps I suggested then I can't help you I'm afraid.
EDIT: you can try the tips on
this site which might help.

The driver simply will not install, it is not that I do not wish to follow at you, completely the opposite.
Went through some of the suggest fixes for skipping and lagging video. Changing to Direct3D9 has helped greatly (OpenGl and OpenCDI made the videos unwatchable), videos are now watchable enough, but it does skip a frames every so often. Sadly none of the other fixes made any difference, FFmpeg actually only made the videos not play at all. If only the resolution was slightly lower I reckon there would be flawless playback.

How about changng the
Vista resolution?
And then try playing a video on vlc. Bear in mind though that if you want to play DVDs current standards require a minimum 720 x 480 to work.

Unfortunately the device's screen is only 4.8" and things begin to break when the resolution is low. That is not a permeant solution if it did work.

I don't know what else to suggest I'm afraid, but one of the mods on here (mederi) has a Vista setup according to their profile so maybe he (or she) might be able to help you.

That's alright, I am grateful that you spent the time to help me out. Hopefully someone else can take over from here.

why bother and struggle when the success will be only half. I tried all the methods and none of the playlists work, half of the performers disappeared and the solution is beautiful in its simplicity. VideoLan / VLC / lua / playlist - I threw everything and from the vlc-4.0.0-dev-win64-cbd1ceeb application, after unpacking the whole lua folder I pasted into the installed one. Works perfectly
