How to get rid of "open media" pop-up setting in VLC

Hi there;
I am using VLC player for decades, but only very recently when I try to hold the mouse button on the time line and move it (to slightly change a video timeline) "open media" pop up appears which bothers me.
(The "open media" window with the default "capture device" tab, to be more precise)
It is normally happening a lot when one need to check a video time line very fast - single click on a spot in timeline without mouse movement is working fine.
I managed to uninstall the player and reinstall it to solve the mentioned problem, but it didn't help.
I am wondering if there is any problem with VLC player in my windows 10?
By the way, if this is a new feature on VLC player and not a problem, I really appreciate if VLC manage to turn this ability on/off in the app setting in forthcoming updates.

my VLC version: 3.0.11 Vetinari
Please help me with this.
Thanks for your time.

https://wiki.videolan.org/VSG:ResetPrefs
Thanks for respond;

I visited the URL;
Neither resetting "preferences" nor deleting "vlc" folder in %APPDATA% works for me.

I should say that my graphics card may not work perfect because I have two errors in Adobe Premier pro (but it works without problem), and also my Adobe photoshop works very well.
Right now I only have this issue in VLC media player and not in some other video players in my device like windows media player, and GOM.

Please inform me if you find a solution to this

I can't reproduce the problem I'm afraid which makes it difficult to troubleshoot. But I have a suggestion which is the use the hotkeys to jump forward rather than dragging the timeline. These are the relevant key combinations.

  • Shift + right arrow to jump 3 seconds forward.
  • Alt + right arrow to jump 10 seconds forward.
  • Ctrl + right arrow to jump 1 minute forward.
You can use the same key combinations to jump backwards by the using left arrow key instead.

Hope this helps.

I feel like it is something related to my Graphic card;
hotkeys always help for sure.
Thanks for your suggestion.

I feel like it is something related to my Graphic card;

Why d'you think that? Have you experienced issues with other apps?

Also, do you have an Optimus laptop? These machines have two graphic cards. One is an Intel which is just a chip on the motherboard while the other is a dedicated Nvidia card with its own RAM. On vlc graphics defaults to the Intel chip, but there's a workaround to change that.

Thanks for responding and sorry to reply very late;
My machine works with onboard intel HD 4000 and a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GT 735M.
I’ve received “Unsupported Video Card” errors on Adobe Premier Pro for ages (for both cards), but the error didn’t stop the app from working; that’s why I am suspected with the graphic!
All other graphical software, however, works very well without reporting any graphic-related error.
I encounter this issue with VLC player very recently - less than a month.

I have the same type of system. Intel 4600 and Nvidia GT 750M. To force your system to default to Nvidia graphics for vlc open C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC and then right click vlc.exe and choose Copy. Paste it temporarily to another folder and then click the copy to highlight. Hit F2 and then rename it to something else such as vlc-new.exe for example. Then move it back to C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC again.

Next, open Nvidia control panel and in the left hand panel click "Manage 3D settings". In the right hand panel click the Program Settings tab and then click the "Add" button and navigate to the copy vlc you just created. In the image I've renamed a copy of vlc.exe to vlc-new.exe. Underneath that use the dropdown menu to change the setting to "High-performance NVIDIA processor".

It's possible that Adobe Premier Pro is already listed in the Nvidia CP, but if it isn't just repeat the same steps to force Nvidia as the default graphics to open it with.

EDIT: Minimum system requirements to run Adobe Premier Pro: https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/sy ... sions.html

Hi there.
I went through the steps, but vlc-new.exe running with the NVIDIA graphic card still has the same pop-up issue as the one with the integrated one.
Thanks for your help, anyway.

OK, a possible solution.

  1. Open prefs and click the radio button to the left of "All" at the bottom of the opening menu.
  2. In the left hand pane in the Search field at the top, type: Qt and then select it when it appears below.
  3. In the right hand Qt menu where it reads "Show notification popup on track change" set it to "Never" via the dropdown menu.
  4. Click Save to make permanent. Here's a pix.

Unfortunately, changing "show notification popup" to "never" didn't help.
The open media pop-up window appears when the application window size is in default and maximize.
Fortunately, I noticed that on my VLC the pop-up is not displayed on full screen mode.

Try doing this. Open prefs and in the Interface menu where it reads "Show media change popup" set it to "Never" via the dropdown menu.

Other settings which might help.

In the same Interface menu in the section "Playlist and Instances" checkmark "Allow only one instance". Immediately below that checkmark "Use only one instance when started from the file manager".

In the last section called "Privacy / Network Interaction" remove the checkmark from "Save recently played items". This will clear the cache.

Don't forget to Save and restart.

Do you use the Windows 10 Jump Lists? There are two settings in there which might be relevant. They're callled "Store recently opened programs" and "Store and display recently opened items in the Jump Lists". If they're enabled then Windows stores everything you ever played in vlc. I have both unchecked on my system for privacy reasons.

Thank you Dear Hitchhiker for your time.
I went through the mentioned settings on VLC; but none of them helped.

For windows 10 jump list, "Store recently opened programs" and "Store and display recently opened items in the Jump Lists" options is slightly changed; they are options available in windows 7 and 8.1 with the mentioned names.
I turned off “Show recently added apps”, and “Show recently opened items in Jump Lists on Start or the taskbar and in …”.
I also deleted the recently opened items from the following location of my hard drive
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations

The above actions didn't help as well.

There's a shortcut key combination to deliberately open the Capture menu which is Ctrl + C. Since that key combination is usually used in Windows to copy something I'm wondering if you might be trying to copy something which you're playing. That doesn't explain why the mouse would initiate that response, but I'm exploring other avenues to try to understand why it might be happening.

You're using the timeline to do what exactly? Are you recording a (live) stream, or are you creating a video from scratch such as a timelapse video? Have you reassigned any Hotkeys to perform a function using the mouse?

Something else to check which is to see if mouse gestures are enabled. See this tutorial on the subject.

Thanks for your attempt.
I am using VLC time line to skim a video; I mean to check it out through time line or to reach a desired spot. This way, by holding the mouse left click I can easily navigate to reach a desired time line while watching a preview of the clip (to find a desired scene). by too many click around the desired time line (instead of dragging), I would have less control over the time line and that generate more of tapping noise!
I am using a M330 Logitech mouse which is a simple wireless mouse; event without mouse if I try to mimic that action with touchpad (by dragging on time line) the window would appear.
I didn’t assign any Hotkeys to perform a function.
And I would like to add this: it is not just about the time line, when I click on the movie picture, the window opens as well. Therefore, it appears both by dragging on timeline and by a click on the picture. I thought that might be normal so didn’t mention it before.

I checked it out; it didn’t help. I only use the mouse wheel to increase and decrease the sound. It works both with the “Mouse gesture Control Interface” ticked and unticked.

Could you try installing a Nightly and see if the problem persists or not. These are BETA versions of the forthcoming v4.0 of vlc. https://nightlies.videolan.org/

Thank You for your support. Unfortunately it didn't help.

Here are the details:
I have installed VLC 4.0 - Windows (64 bits) – (vlc-4.0.0-dev-win64-fa1c2fce.exe 45M 16-Dec-2020 04:21). Note: I didn’t uninstall the latest official (stable) version of VLC; I chose “upgrade”
It didn’t solve the problem.
I uninstalled the app with the option “delete preferences and cache” being ticked. Then I restart my machine. Afterward, I installed the 16-Dec-2020 app again (I chose custom with “delete preferences and cache” being ticked again). I gave the app access through firewalls when windows asked.
Again, It didn’t help.

I think you've got a corrupted registry. That's the only logical conclusion given the circumstances. It's not the first time something like this has happened if that's any consolation and there's a similar story in this thread: https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=83072 It doesn't help you any because it's a different problem i.e. clicking a folder in Windows Explorer caused vlc to open.

Did you enable Windows System Restore when you purchased the computer? On all versions of Windows up until Windows 10 it's enabled by default, but on W10 it's disabled. It can be enabled but requires users to perform that step manually.

If you did enable it you can run it to wind back the clock to a date and time prior to the problem occuring. That will restore a version of the registry which isn't corrupted. If you didn't enable it then the only course of action is to run a Windows 10 Reset which restores default settings without affecting your own data.

You can hang around a bit longer if you prefer since another user might know of a workaround or even how to fix it, but this thread has been running a while already and nobody else has made any suggestions. But you never know.

Thanks;
My system restore is on but I prefer to wait for a period of time to see if windows itself fixes the issue.

OK, fair enough. There is one other option which occurred to me a few minutes ago which is to use Microsoft's tool to uninstall vlc and also to fix corrupted registry keys. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... or-removed

Might work.

EDIT: You can also run DISM to repair the Windows image. The command which has to be run from an elevated command prompt is this one:
DISM.exe/Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

When I restart my machine (windows 10), the issue comes back.

Check the DISM log which is located at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM to see what errors it identified and fixed. It's just a text file which will open in Notepad.

I opened the file with Atom and used the shortcut key Ctrl+F5 to find the word "error”; there were 635 detected words" So it is too many to check it out. If you know some smart words to easily detect the area of log file, please help me with that, so I would get fewer result to check. The generated log file has 40100 lines.

Thanks
