Hi

so wanted to use VLC as my main windows player, but sadly it's not up to the mark when playing back DVD images from my hard drive

It constantly pauses the video / sound when moving from one chapter to the next ... what is this all about, its a major issue/flaw/bug in VLC player

I am using that latest version of VLC in windows 7 64bit

other players allow DVD image to playback perfectly between chapters but not VLC player, its buggy


is there any fix or do I have to use other DVD players for perfect seemless playback


THERE IS NO REASON WHY VLC should pause the video at CHAPTER MARKERS , but it does

I'm having the same issues. Video stops, audio continues; audio stops, video continues. Luckily I'm not using this to watch anything because I'd never be able to watch. I'm using it to make video clips from my own dvd that I created (non-copyrighted). For awhile there (a week and a half, a clip or two a day) it worked okay, so if I wanted to, say, post the clip to facebook, it would do that and facebook would clear the clip up even if it was running on my desktop with all these problems, so it was still useful for what I needed even though in order to get a watchable clip I had to upload it to facebook or some other platform. But now that's not even working. The clip is still bad and now facebook nor any other platform will even upload the clip.

I have spent all day on this problem and part of yesterday. I saw the link you provided here sometime yesterday. None of these fixes worked. I also saw the online article about 4 common vlc fixes and tried all of that. I've uninstalled and reinstalled vlc at least 3 times, as well as tried a couple of different versions and cleared prefernces and cache. I've cleared my browser cache, I've cleared cookies. I've followed directions on adjusting settings (like your link) that are supposed to help. I've tried converting clips to mp4's. I'm so far down the rabbit hole, your posted link is from hours and hours ago for me.

But I am hoping you or someone else can help, even if it's just to tell me that vlc is full of bugs and doesn't work very well, because at least then I can let it go. I'm using Windows 10. Who has some insight on what is going on here? And if nobody has any insight, can someone please recommend another media player that will do this same thing, because I've spent a solid amount of time on that too and even downloaded a few only to find they weren't at all what I needed, and I have no idea which to try. Thanks for any form of help anyone can give me.

I agree NONE of the fixes worked for me I have also messed around with loads more setting too, nothing works VLC is so flawed!!

I'M USING windows 7 64bit

VLC As a player it's good

BUT VLC IS TOTALLY USELESS AND FLAWED at playing DVDs

Navigation is causing pausing, as it jumps from file to file, sometimes it ends early half way through the speech

Certain parts of the DVD don't play correctly to the end

sometimes it pauses from chapter to chapter

its so unstable playing dvds its awful

all I am trying to do is play a ripped DVD image from the harddrive and its failing big time

its a total waste of space, and I don't think there is any cure as I have wasted days and nothing seems to work

can't believe it's been these bugs and flaws have been missed

I'm sure there must be some way to fix. This is a time tested, popular app. People wouldn't be using it and it wouldn't still exist if it didn't work, so I tend to think there's some problem on my end that I can adjust. I'm still hoping someone will come along here and help us out.

If I understand you correctly you ripped a DVD to your hard disk, but now playback pauses during which both audio and video fail when a chapter changes.

What I'll have to do here is rip one of my own and to see if I can reproduce the problem.

Ok I have ripped 100s of DVDs over the past few weeks ready for when I purchase my media players UHD200 / 1000 pro zidoo

I have used VLC to test the RIPS and with the problems questioned the quality of the DVD RIPs especially as the DISNEY DVDs seem to play up worst ? when playing in VLC

so wanting another way to test I have download a different player POWER DVD 12 although old and very much bloated compared to VLC and can confirm it does a much much better job of playing DVDs in the correct structure without too many issues

That said I would prefer to use VLC as it is much lighter and I like VLC

But its playback of DVD is awful and needs lots of attention to get rid of the many bugs that exist

I successfully ripped a DVD and as long as you checkmark "No DVD menus" playback is smooth with no breaks.

Hmm. Sadly, this doesn't work for me either. Since I couldn't get decent recordings while the dvd was playing using the record button, I tried this several times last night, hoping I could drop the dvd on my hard drive then make clips from that, but sadly I had little success. It made a recording all right, but it was awful quality and sometimes way off on the aspect ratio depending on which option I chose. Can you tell me what settings you use and do you convert them to anything? MP4 or anything?

If you rip a DVD to a Hard Drive Folder, 1:1 a true clone of a DVD, the way it should be ripped, VLC should play it perfectly, but i does NOT! (VIDEO / AUDIO) FOLDER

IT SHOULD PLAY THE DVD IMAGE ON THE HARD DRIVE THE SAME AS IF YOU HAVE PUT THE DVD DISC IN YOUR SONY HARDWARE DVD PLAYER ?

I just used the default settings i.e. Ctrl + D to open the menu, click Convert, give it a name / destination folder and start.

Shadows are much lighter, but unless you're specifically looking for that kind of anomaly you wouldn't notice it I would've thought.

I would suggest using the converted file to make clips rather than trying to record from the DVD. Your system setup plays a role too so perhaps you can post the specs to that.

or maybe there not using 1:1 native rips of DVDs as most people seem to strip only the film with makemkv ?

Vlc is open source and therefore free. Power DVD is Shareware which means you can try it for free, but will have to put money on the table to continue using it.

I would suggest using the converted file to make clips rather than trying to record from the DVD. Your system setup plays a role too so perhaps you can post the specs to that.

I dunno. I guess I'll give up on this. Really nothing about VLC is working correctly for me. I feel sure I understand how to use it, because it did work--not perfectly, but enough to do what I needed it to do-- for about a week and a half, then it just stopped working. There's just some problem somewhere I guess. I've spent a whole lot of time on this and I just don't know where else to look or what could possibly still be the problem. There's not a single task it does well for me, so I can't really do other tasks from there if I can't even get past the first step. I just don't know what alternative program / app to try. I just downloaded handbrake so I guess I'll try that, but I don't see where I can rip a dvd-- but I just this minute downloaded it and looked at it-- I haven't read anything about how to use it yet. Will I be able to record a clip from a dvd with Handbrake? Or rip a dvd then record a clip from that?

By "specs" I meant the hardware in your computer. If you don't know what those components are please post the make and model of the machine and whether it's a laptop or a desktop PC.

Also please post the Windows 10 version you have installed. Again, if you don't know what that is hit Windows key + R to open the Run command and type WINVER and click OK.

I fully knew this already, and not really sure of the point you were making ?

Free vs Pay,

I want it to work correctly, so happy to pay for something that does the job correctly


All I was indicating that VLC don't work and Power DVD does, the two are like Chalk & Cheese

If VLC is Useless with playing DVDs, it would be better for VLC not to advertise that it can Play DVDs, as clearly can not!

Then we would not waste our time with VLC.
