Video stops after pausing?

VLC 3.0.11 Vetinari, W7x64.
1. Pause a video
2. Continue playing a few minutes later
3. Video plays for a couple of frames and stops
4. Audio fully continues playing in background
**Simply pressing STOP button and then Continue playback properly resumes video playback.
I'm unsure when did this start occurring.
I haven't changed my hardware or software (and I'm playing files from the same HDD I played for ages now).
I've defragmented the disk, and also ran disk scans, everything is in order.

Possibly due to a corrupted file somewhere. To fix open vlc and hit Ctrl + P to open prefs and then click the big Reset Preferences at the bottom. Exit and restart vlc.

Ironically, I literary installed a copy of fresh Windows 7 yesterday on another disk, and the issue still persists.

Are you streaming from a site such as youtube for example, or are the files located locally?

I'm using GTX1060 and 3770k, never had an issue playing anything until recently, maybe NVidia's driver update changed something?

It's possible. What version are the Nvidia drivers?
Could you please download this
analytical application and then post the info here.

Output module or HW acceleration?

The latter.

The latter.
So far it seems that disabling acceleration works without issues. I'll try DXVA and D3D11 again, but this puzzles me, as I said,
nothing hw/sw has changed here for a good few years except VLC updates and driver changes.
Oddly enough, I hoped a fresh Windows installation would help, but issue still persists.

Been having same issue with VLC playing DVD images
Pauses, skips stutters, VLC is dreadful
still haven't found a solution yet, just put it down to VLC being buggy

I actually don't have stutters and pauses, I pause manually, and have no more
video (just few frames and it stops) after resuming.

A note from the Nvidia site regarding Windows 7. I can't link to the page exactly, but here's a relevant screenshot.

Here's the
link to the release notes.
Before you installed those drivers did you uninstall the old ones first and if so, how did you perform that step?
Whenever I update Intel or Nvidia drivers I always use
this uninstaller and run it in Safe Mode.

Yes I can get SHA-2 updates and drivers. I always upgraded but checked perform clean install with NVidia, used DDU in some extreme cases. But this is happening on fresh Windows, so... Trying a day or two with DXVA to see how it goes.

Where did the .mkv file come from? The reason I'm asking is because I don't have a video with that file type on my system and therefore can't test it to see if the same thing happens. Pausing an .mp4 file and then continuing after a couple of minutes works normally.

Thing is, it's not just that one file. Some seem to work (pause/resume) with HW acceleration properly. Some just have few pixelated/glitchy frames and resume. And a rare few like this one completely won't play video after resuming.
And not a single one has an issue without HW acceleration.

I'm having the exact same problem.
