Frame-By-Frame Freezes

Postby Xebarsis » 06 Sep 2020 19:36

I've been recording video game footage and viewing it frame-by-frame by pressing 'E' so I can find problems with my performance. Unfortunately, when viewing frame-by-frame, usually after viewing anywhere from 10-30 frames, the video will eventually freeze and pressing 'E' will no longer advance the frame. If I hit play at this point, the audio will play but the video will stay frozen until I jump to a different part of the video, and then it'll unfreeze.

I followed all the instructions on this page https://www.vlchelp.com/stop-hd-video-f ... ezing-vlc/, but I think that the issue I'm experiencing is a little different since it only happens when viewing frames, so nothing on the article corrected my issue. I recently upgraded my PC (new CPU, RAM, and motherboard), and the issue is still occurring, so I don't think it's my specs. Any suggestions?

Tools > Preferences > Show settings=All > Input/Codecs: Fast seek?
Try VLC Extension: https://addons.videolan.org/p/1154013/

Is there any possibility of this bug being fixed in the near future? There's an open bug report which is more than *12* years old!

Given that VLC has to decode every frame in order to display it, where exactly is the problem with single-stepping through those frames?

Rather than complain about the bug, try the addon which was suggested in the same thread which is this one: https://addons.videolan.org/p/1154013/

To install it do the following:
  1. After downloading it unzip the file and you'll find two .lua files one of which is called
"Jump to time V3 for VLC3.lua"
  2. Move that file to this location: C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\extensions
  3. Click it once to highlight and then hit the F2 key and rename just the extension to .luac so that it becomes
"Jump to time V3 for VLC3.luac"
  4. Close Windows File Explorer and launch vlc. You'll find the addon via the View menu on the top toolbar.
Here's an image of the addon installed on my own system.

I've actually completely given up on VLC, this bug is never going to get fixed.

Instead I am using LosslessCut https://github.com/mifi/lossless-cut
It has perfect single-stepping forwards, and backwards too, and better screenshots (png or jpeg, and with proper timestamp filenames).
And the user interface is very well designed.
(It also does lossless crops too ;-))
