Audio for downloaded DVD in Windows

I'll start this post by saying I know enough about this stuff to just cause myself frustration and headaches. If anyone asks me to provide code, that ain't gonna happen. No clue how to do those things. I'm a front-end user only. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

I've been trying to download some owned DVDs using VLC and the Convert feature for personal use during air travel. I downloaded them successfully from DVD to MP4 format (H.264 + MP3). I'm also able to get playback to work in VLC with English audio which is great. My issue is when I try to play the same file in any other app. I've tried opening the file in Windows Movies & TV app as well as WMP. In all cases the video plays, but not the audio. I like some of the playback features in other apps. I also would like to copy the files to my phone. I find it strange that the audio works only in VLC. The audio isn't even recognized in other apps. What I mean is if I open the Volume Mixer while it's playing, it doesn't list the app at all.

Does anyone know if I'm doing something wrong or is this just a limitation of the program? I'm immediately assuming user error because it's usually the case. I've tried downloading different audio tracks with VLC to no avail. I'm out of my limited logical options.

Also, as a side note I'm completely unable to download Blu Rays even after checking Blu Ray instead of DVD. Not sure if that's an easy fix, or if Blu Rays have better protections. Just curious.

Thanks again!

Maybe other programs don't like MP3 in MP4 container, try to encode audio to AAC instead.

For Bluray playback you need to read these threads:

Thanks for your response Lotesdelere. I'll give it a try, but other MP4 movies that I've downloaded seem to work in all apps which leads me to believe it's user error. I'll definitely try another format though to see if I can get it to work. I tried a couple of others, but they were all MP4.

And thanks for the links. I'll read up on those. I realized that I can't even play Blu Rays so I did some minor research on the error. I was getting the AACS error. I'm assuming these threads will help me download additional decoding files or whatever (look at me trying to sound all technical.)

Thanks again!

Not sure if I can mark this topic as solved, but I finally figured out the issue. After selecting to Convert, next to "Profile" is a wrench button with additional features. I clicked it, went to the "Audio Codec" tab, and noticed MP3 was not selected in the drop down. I switched to MP3, went through the rest of the process, and tested it. Bingo! Now I get audio in all apps. Hope this helps others if they run into this issue.
