Weak and/or Undersaturated Color when Playing 4K/UHD Blu-rays with HDR Enabled in the Windows 10 Display Settings

Postby Chris Kelly » 30 Nov 2019 16:30

I'm using a laptop with a built-in Samsung 4K/UHD OLED 15.6" panel with integrated Intel UHD 620 Graphics. I have Windows 10 PRO 1909, VLC Media Player 3.0.8, and the latest version of my Intel Graphics UHD 620 driver. When I enable HDR in the Windows 10 display settings, I notice an improvement in the contrast. However, my colors are weaker, less intense, and undersaturated. I tried checking and unchecking "Use full range" in the X.264 and X.264 10-bit settings, but tbut this has no affect/effect. I tried the brightness control in the Windows HD color settings. While that makes colors brighter, they still get undersaturated. Are there any settings in the Intel Graphics Control Panel, Windows 10, or VLC Media Player that I should experiment with? I wish I could upload the test file I'm using to this forum.

O tried changing the primary options in the Open GL settings which didn't make a difference. So I set them back to their defaults. I increased the color saturation in the Intel Graphics Control Panel. This was the only option I had left. The only thing I don't like about this is the idea that I might be modifying the image from what was recorded. On the other hand, who knows. Maybe you're supposed to increase color saturation when HDR is engaged. Now I have the high contrast of HDR and punchy colors. Flesh tones don't look too red as far as I can tell. I just thought I'd post my solution in case others are having similar difficulty.
