How to use VLC with watch.spectrum.net

I wanted to try VLC with the Spectrum, aka Charter, TV video streaming service. I wanted to see if it performed any better than my browser, which maxed out my CPU.
I tried simply entering watch.spectrum.net in the network URL text entry box in the network tab of the Open Media dialog box.
I saw what looked like message appear and disappear above the play button. It did not stay long enough for me to read it. I tried both http:// and http://. Neither worked.
In my browser, the page displays a log on box for this URL.
I would assume since many, if not most, streaming sites require a log in, VLC handles logons.
I use VLC 2.2.8 under Windows 7 SP1. I tried version 3 but uninstalled it because the controls in Video Effects, in Adjustments and Effects did not work, and I need those settings.
