VLC 3.0.8 Audio issue on .MOV files?

Postby Rallydarkstrike » 24 Aug 2019 21:42

Hi all,

Not sure what version I was running before, but finally decided to upgrade VLC to 3.0.8 when prompted when I opened the program today. Bad idea, it turns out, as now the video clips from my dashcam (1080p .MOV files) have distorted audio. It's not the dashcam as files from my brother's exact same model dashcam also do not work.

The 1080p video from the files in question is fine and plays perfectly and smoothly, but the audio is echo-y and distorted. I tried formatting my MicroSD card and re-recording a test video clip, same issue. When I play the same file in Windows Media Player, it plays back PERFECTLY, no distorted audio there, so the issue is only with VLC 3.0.8 as my dashcam clips played fine in the previous version I was using just a few days ago.

I've already gone into the audio preferences and tried changing the Output Module and Output Device. Changing the Device from 'Default' to anything else makes no difference. Changing the 'Output Module' from 'Automatic' to 'Windows Multimedia Device', 'DirectX' or 'WaveOut' makes no difference - audio is still distorted.

What changed in the last update that could've caused this?

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of a problematic file to Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to WeTransfer.com and then post the link to the file here.
http://www.zippyshare.com
https://wetransfer.com

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
100 MB max should be enough.

Hi,

I have a similar issue with MOV files so I am pasting the data as per instructions.
The log address :- https://pastebin.com/n0wjdhKp

Also I would like to upload the MOV file but as a newbie I don't know where exactly to transfer the data via wetransfer.. I have mailed it to videolan@videolan.org
If there is any other address where I am supposed to send the file please let me know.

I'm on a trip at the moment away from my Windows machine (I have my Linux laptop running an older version of VLC with me at the moment that has no such issue)...any thoughts or progress on this bug?

Cheers

I've had a really hard time with VLC on my desktop windows machine, the performance has been unusable for the most part, maybe due to incompatibility with my Vega 64 GPU.
The performance has been so bad that my 7-year old dual-core macbook with integrated graphics was running smoother.

After the 3.0.8 it seems to play smoother, but now I get choppy audio.
Not sure if it's the same issue, I'm uploading a report here, please let me know if I need to report it seperately.

I'm running Windows 10 with Vega 64, 8-core Ryzen 1700x, 32GB Ram and on-board audio from the Asus Prime X370-Pro.
As mentioned, I'm using VLC 3.0.8

Are your video files .MOV format? I am having issues with choppy audio in .MOV files, everything else plays fine for me.

Yes, the videos with the choppy audio are .MOV files, that's why I'm posting it here. :)

Same thing here. Choppy audio in .mov files. In 3.0.8. They play perfectly in previous 3.0.7? version.

On top of that, I have the exact same problem with the latest VLC Android version 3.1.7. Needed to re-install version 3.1.6 to fix that problem.

So both latest VLC versions on both Windows and Android exhibit the same problem.

Yup....surprised this doesn't seem to be getting as much attention. Glad it's not just me!

Quicktime...
I see where the regression is.
Will have a fix in the next release.

I also have this problem with 3.0.8 and MOV files from my dashcam. I'm relieved to see that the cause has been found by the developer a couple of posts above, and that a fix will be applied. Meanwhile I have reverted to 3.0.7.1 which is fine.

(I tried version 4 from the nightly builds, and it doesn't have the problem, but I could never work with the new interface, so I hope the traditional interface (with menus!) that we have now will be made available as well.)

Came here after experiencing the same problem

Aargh! I had reverted to 3.0.7.1 because of this problem in 3.0.8 and was just offered a "new" version which fixed "some minor regressions". Assuming one of the fixes was for this problem, I downloaded and installed it, only to find it was the dreaded 3.0.8 again :). Gone back to 3.0.7.1 again, and will be very wary of updating until I'm sure it's a later version!

For the benefit of others, 3.0.7.1 is available here: http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/3.0.7.1/win64/ I tried the msi version, but it didn't work for me - the exe version was fine.

You should create a new ticket on the VLC Trac with the link to this thread.

Just to confirm, I also had the same problem since updating to 3.0.8. I've just tried the same clip in nightly 3.0.9-20191105-0510 and it plays normally again.

Thanks for sorting, InTheWings!

I'm having the same audio issue, but W10 64bit VLC tells me 3.0.8 is the latest version

Thanks

Yes, the videos with the choppy audio are .MOV files, that's why I'm posting it here. :)

I just wanted to post to say that I had the same issue with dashcam .MOV videos with the audio being distorted (choppy). I tried the nightly build vlc-3.0.9-20191022-0511 and the issue was resolved.

Thanks!
