Large delay with Opus files on Windows 10 1903

Hi,

Since I updated Windows 10 to version 1903 a few days ago, I notice the following issue with VLC :

- When I open an Opus file, there is a considerable delay, of about one minute, before VLC actually starts playing the file.
- If VLC is closed and I open an Opus file (system is configured to have VLC as the default player for Opus), VLC seems to do nothing for a while (no audio, no visual activity). If I close VLC during this period, the window closes, but the VLC process still runs in the background for a while. If I try to play another file during this period, VLC is unresponsive.
- If VLC is already running when I double click on the Opus file : there is still the same delay, but this time, the behaviour is slight different because in the time bar at the bottom of the window, there is this orange segment that appears and moves back and forth for the duration of the delay.
- However, if I play several files and keep them in the playlist, there’s no delay for Opus files that I have already played before. The delay for a specific file occurs only the first time I play it in a VLC run. If I close VLC, the delays return.

I thought that it might have been an issue with VLC 3.0.7 because I upgraded from 3.0.6 shortly before the big Windows update, but I went back to 3.0.6, and the issue is still present. I tried reinstalling 3.0.7 completely, deleting the cache and preferences, and the problem persists.

Other file formats, such as MP3, videos in various formats, do not show this problem and start playing immediately.

Any idea of what could be the cause ? Thanks

It seems that the problem is the codec for OPUS. I have installed VLC 2.0.4 and it has been resolved.
On the other hand, Windows 1903 also delays when trying to delete or rename .opus files. I have solved it with K-Lite Codec Pack vers 15.1.2 Basic
Keep your version 3.0.7 and try installing K-Lite first
Don't ask me why Microsoft checks those files, I don't understand it either

I am running 3.0.10 64 (portable) on Win 10 1909 and just tried playing (and converting) an opus file from WhatsApp. All I get is an orange band that traces back and forth (like the "eye" on the car in Knight Rider).

I tried it on my Win 8.1 box with VideoLAN 3.0.8 portable, and it still works there.

So I tried the 32-bit portable version on my Win 10 box. Still doesn't work.

I suppose I should try running 3.0.10 portable on my Win 8.1 box to see if the problem follows VLAN or Windows.

Same issue with VLC 3.0.11 and WIndows 10 1909. Whereas I have no problem playing/converting opus files on my Win8.1 box using VLC 3.0.11.

So apparently a Win 10 problem.

You might have a bug in your hard disk driver, then.

I'm honored to have a developer check in.

Just to check your hypothesis, I installed VLC to a completely different Hard Drive.

No change.

I have run chkdsk on my OS drive. No errors found.

Is there some debug logs that I can send you?

Ah, I see you said "hard disk driver," not drive. Well, have tried on my M.2, SSD and spinning disk.

As a "Sanity Check," I tested by dragging an opus file to Audacity Portable v2.3.3.

It plays fine on Audacity. But not on VLC.
