Frozen video

Windows 10, VLC 3.0.6
3.2 GHz CPU with 8 cores, 32 GB DDR4 memory.
Blu-ray '.ISO' on a USB3 HDD mounted via Virtual CloneDrive.

I'm experiencing judder & up to 5 seconds of frozen frame. Also short frozen frames as often as 1 per second. The symptoms are variable and appear to be non-repeatable.

I've tried setting 'Advanced Preferences' 'Input / Codecs' 'Advanced'
: 'File caching (ms)' from it's default ('300' I believe) to '10' and to '20000'.
: 'Disc caching (ms)' from it's default ('300') to '10' and to '20000'.

Higher numbers are better (...no surprise there...) but I'm still having difficulties. Smooth playback is all but impossible. Audio plays even while video is frozen.

Any suggestions?

This is frustrating. Since I started this thread...

I closed VLC, then closed my Linux Virtual Machine. Then I launched VLC (without the VM running) and aside from taking almost a second to begin playing following a movie index forward or back (during which time there's broken video), VLC plays fine. So I relaunched the VM while VLC was playing and aside from a few very short pauses during the VM boot-up, VLC is fine.

I don't know what the problem was, but I appologize for the interruption.

PS: I have had trouble that seemed to, 1, not be related to the VM (running or not running), and 2, got worse with this latest version of VLC. Otherwise, I would not post a problem here based on a single incident.
