Converting from 32-bit to 64-bit VLC

I'm running a 64-bit Windows 10 system with 32-bit VLC media player. I see there is also a 64-bit version, and I wonder if and how I would move to it.
What are the advantages to the 64-bit VLC over 32 (I looked in the wiki and other support areas, but if it was there I missed it.)
And if I download and install the 64 to replace the 32, should I uninstall the 32 before or after the install; and is there a way to keep my VLC preferences through the upgrade?
