Disable "Always fit window" forever? not remembered at exit

Assume I opened (by double clicking) a large (AVI) video in VLC. The height of the video is higher as the screen height.
So it is somehow shrinked.
The option in menu
Video->Always fit window
is enabled (=checkmark left of it is visible).
Now I disable it (=remove check). When I exit and restart the video the checkmark is enabled again.
How do I disable it permanently (beyond exit and restart)?

hi,
you can go in tools > preferences, uncheck "resize interface to video size" then restart VLC. it will set the option permanently

Nonsense, it makes NO difference. No matter WHAT you try or change, the next time you open VLC Player, the "Always Fit Window" option checkbox is once again ticked and active. This is the most stupid and infuriating "feature" (or bug) I have ever encountered. There is NOWHERE in settings to disable that "feature".

I figured it out. To disable the feature permanently you must uncheck the option "Video Auto Scaling" on Advanced Preferences > Video.

It worked for me. Thanks! Please note that from my experiences, the changes you save in preferences does not take effect until you close the video completely and reopen one again. "Fit to window" no longer automatically happens for me now.
