VLC 3.0.4+ Not Displaying GUI

Postby arcadeportal32 » 24 Dec 2018 03:41

I have an old computer, well in the PC world old is an understatment in this case. I want to watch DVDs on it without using
PowerDVDs laggy interface.

I fixed and modded this PC Primarily for playing DOOM & DOS Titles Natively BUT also have the power to play other older games like Morrowind, GTA III San Andreas, Half Life, RCT3, Halo, Far Cry but i'v even gotten some more modern titles to run on it like Skyrim (At 10FPS), Minecraft, Terraria & Titan Souls (Titan Souls runs pretty good with a controller lol). Anyway lol...

I also use this PC to watch DVDs on my TV.

There is sadly not much support for these old PC's, so I hope the forms here can help being very open source. I updated VLC to the latest version VLC 3.0.4 at the time of typing this, well now all VLC does when you boot it is show the VLC Command Line Interface. But nothing elce? No GUI shows up however opening a MP4 video in windows to VLC seem to play very good (But do not show any pause, play, stop, buttons) and the console shows many errors....

(main filter error: Failed to create video converter) errors
(chain filter error: Too High level of recursion <3>) errors
(main vout display error: Failed to create video converter)
(main vout display error: Failed to adapt decoder format to display)
(main video output error: video output creation failed)
(main decoder error: failed to create video output)
(gl vout display error: parent window not available)
(dxva2 generic error: FindVideoServiceConversion failed)
(gl vout display error: parent window not available)

The video will then play and run as normal in a Windows box, but no GUI controls are shown.
Playing anything elce also seams to run with only the CMD interface running.

If uninstalled and used Portable versions of VLC 3.0.4 and cleared any old VLC preffs in the installer, but still no luck getting the GUI to start. I could prob control the videos VIA CMD, but I rather use a GUI if I can get it to work. Otherwise I could revert back to PRE 3.0 as my next option though I would like the newer features.

Here are my PC's Specs if you would like :)

PC: 1999/2000 Dell Dimensions L1000R :D
CPU: Pentium III Single-Core Coppermine 997Mhz
RAM: 256MB SDRAM
GPU: Full Size 256MB DDR2 nVidia GeForce EVGA 6200
PSU: Propriatary Dell PSU around 100wattish
HDD: Dual 40GB IDE Internal Hard Drives WD & Seagate
External HDD: 1TB Toshiba (for game/movies)
Sound Card: a good old Sound Blaster 128 with MIDI/GamePort

I Hope you can help, that chromecast support sounds good :D

Edit: I can report that I can controll the videos VIA CMD, but Still I would love the use the GUI

Hi, can you send all the logs that you get while launching "vlc -vvv" ?

Horsing around with VLC, there is an -I option
So, vlc -I,QT should bring up the regular interface.

vlc -I,Lua brings up a command prompt type thing.

So, first go to task manager and terminate any running instances. Then open a command prompt so that you can enter options. Change to the appropriate directory if needed, and try VLC -I,QT
If it opens, go into preferences and fix your interface preferences.

Lotesdelere:

This seems impossable or maybe the problem glitch because I have opened the %appdata% folder and it is not there, there is NO VLC folder in Application Data at all.
This issue is on Windows XP Pro SP3 with every Microsoft Distro Package I could get working.
This includes.
Microsoft Redistributable 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2017, XNA Framework Redis 4, NET Framework (2,3,3.5,4,4 Extended), and some others.

Edit: :geek: On a note with OS's, Using a newer OS is possable, but Dual-Booting Windows 7 or 8.1 does requires some "Unoffical" patching of the OS's ISO itself that I have yet to do. Windows 10, is just out of the question lol.

VLCwin7User & Unidan:

Should the command "vlc -vvv" or "vlc -vvv" in the Command Line Interface work as such.
Here is the steps I have taken.

1. I clicked "VLC Media Player" on the Desktop.
2. A Window opens "VLC Media Player" as a Command Line Interface.
3. I Type "vlc -i,qt" and "vlc -vvv" and it displays....

VLC media player 3.0.4 Vetinari
Command Line Interface initialized. Type 'help' for help.
>vlc -vvv
Error in 'vlc -vvv' libvlc's "vlc" is not a command
Unknown command 'vlc'. Type 'help' for help

Oh and Happy Holidays, hope you can help. I'm actualy typing this on my Pentium III PC.

Found after installing a Dual-Boot of Windows 7 along with Windows XP. I have found it has the same problem. Which I can only assume it is a "Hardware incomptability problem", any version 3.0+ Vetinari is incomptable "at least" on my PCs certain configuation. Anything below 3.0 works just fine.

Here is the full spec sheet if you want to find the reason why it is not working, otherwise I will just stick with VLC 2.2.8 Weatherwax.

System Model: Dell Dimensions L1000R
OS: Dual-IDE-Drive DualBoot Windows 7 Pro SP1 with Aero & Windows XP Pro SP3
CPU: Intel Pentium III 997Mhz
RAM: 256MB SDRAM (254MB Usable)
HDD: Dual 40GB IDE HDDs with 1TB Ext Drive
Page File: around 2GB for both OS's
DirectX Version(s): Windows 7 ( DX11), WinXP (DX9)
GPU: NVIDIA EVGA GeForce 6200 with 256MB DDR2
Running at (1920x1080p 32Bit @ 60Hz) all DX Features Enabled.
Audio: 1999 Creative SoundBlaster 128 PCI Sound Card with Gameport
Keyboard: Corsair K70 LUX MXCherry Keyboard.
Mouse: Corsair M65 RGB Mouse.

NOTE: I have not yet updated my .NET yet to 4.6 or 4.7 on Win7. I will edit this post if that fixes the issue. Though I think this has to do with the new security updates which may mean it could require a proccessor code ext that the Pentium III just doesen't have or a chipset incomptability.

CPU: Intel Pentium III 997Mhz

Hmmm, SSE2 required maybe ? Which the PIII doesn't have.
Just an idea.
