Recordings made using VLC's recorder will not play back on VLC?

Hello.

I have a home-recorded DVD that I wanted on my hard drive, and used VLC to play the disc. I pushed the "record" button, and an .mpg file was created.

Now, however, the .mpg file will not play back on VLC. I get the audio, but no video.

I tried to play the same file on Windows Media Player, and the computer told me I needed an MPEG 2 video extension. It connected to the Windows App store, and downloaded the extension. Once that was done, Windows Media Player could play the .mpg file VLC had created. Both audio and video.

The VLC player, however, still cannot play the recording and produce both audio and video. It still only plays the audio.

Is there an MPEG 2 extension that will allow VLC to play the recording properly?

I'm very much surprised that VLC cannot play a recording that it made itself.

Help! (Please... Thank you!)

If the "record" button isn't enough to record a DVD, what IS the record button used for, then?
