Convert/Save full instructions needed

I am trying to crop and save, I have version 3.0.4. I have followed various online guides e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uwd8StqAEuM . I can't find straightforward instructions in VLC documentation. I have found the crop filter and it works. Then I go to save/convert. I select various options as indicated by youtube guides. Then press save and then it crashes.
Where is the definitive instruction please?

Thanks, Robin

Here's a good tutorial illustrated with screenshots which I've used myself in the past.

What I suggest you do before you begin though is to reset preferences by clicking Tools---> Preferences and then click the button by the same name at the foot of the menu which opens. Resetting prefs reinstates default values.

Sadly, the tutorial provided by Hitchhiker does not work. (Nor does the YouTube video tutorial.)
I've tried applying this tutorial and others and nothing works consistently. When testing, I did manage to save a Sepia video and also one that was flipped 90 degrees. But nothing else works so far.
Here's a comment from 2017 that sums it up pretty well:
"Sorry but this does not work. If you don’t turn off the effects after going through your procedure then any video you play next on VLC will also have those effects on them – this includes the video you have just supposedly edited. But if you do turn off the effects then even the video you thought you added effects to will not have them. This can only mean that the effects only work in real time via the VLC player and are not actually imbedded into the video. My guess is that VLC cannot add effects permanently to a video file."
