Video being displayed in portrait mode while shot in landscape mode

Postby Marcusdeman » 03 Dec 2018 20:30

Hello,

I am running 3.0.4 Vetinari on Win 7 x64.

The other day I shot a movie on my samsung s9 phone in landscape mode. Resolution states 1920x1080.

When I watch it in VLC the video is shown in portrait mode with black bars on both sides. Ofcourse this makes it difficult to watch.

I tried the last nightly build (4.0 something) but situation persists.

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also please upload a short sample of a problematic file to Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) and then post the link to the file here.

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
100 MB max should be enough.

Here is the logfile.

I tried cutting a short part of the movie with Avidemux but the saved version was displayed correctly.

Hopefully the logfile already shows the culprit?

As requested, we also need a sample file.

On the top toolbar in vlc go to Video ---> Aspect Ratio and change it to 16:9

That doesn't work. It will only stretch out the video.

I don't doubt what you say, but could you please play the video and then click Tools ---> Codec Information. Does it say that video resolution is 1920x1080 in there as well?

If it does then we'll need a sample of your video to investigate further. See instructions in this post on what to do.

It says: Video Resolution 1080x1920

The video has been rotated as it was shot in portrait mode.

Wait a minute. In your opening post you stated that you shot a video in landscape mode. Now you're saying it was shot in portrait mode. Which is it?

Hitchhiker:

Yes sorry for my mistake! I apologize for that.

The codec resolution I mentioned is also incorrect.

Codec information says: video resolution 1920x1080
Changing aspect ratio to 16:9 does nothing to the video.

Hi,
I am using "VLC Media Player" v 3.0.16 Vetinary on win7prof x64
I have the same problem.
I have got the TV-file "ZDFinfo Doku-Da Vinci Code an der Loire - Das Geheimnis von Schloss Chambord-0733329912.mp4".
In the "Magix Video Pro" I can see this File in landscape (it´s okay), but in the VLC in portrait (it´s false).
This confuses me.
