H265 files Freezing on all updates past 2.2.8

Postby Khazea » 20 Aug 2018 00:47

While trying to play video files that are 1080p H265 I am Experiancing Video freezing after about 1 min of video play.

I have taken back from each update clear back to 2.2.8 and the issue doesn't happen on this Version. all Versions after this the freezing issue occurs.

My system:
Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 17134) (17134.rs4_release.180410-1804)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
BIOS: 2501 (type: UEFI)
Processor: AMD FX(tm)-8350 Eight-Core Processor (8 CPUs), ~4.3GHz
Memory: 16384MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 16282MB RAM
Page File: 6895MB used, 11818MB available
DirectX Version: DirectX 12
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip type: GeForce GTX 970
Display Memory: 12184 MB

With this setup i should be able to easily play these files. and on the Version 2.2.8 it does.
So not sure where the disconnect between 3.0.0 - 3.0.3 is and the 2.2.8 version, but it defiantly does seem to exist.

I am not a coder. I have no idea what to suggest to approach the issue. So for now i will just use the old version. and try again when 3.0.4 or whatever the next version is and hope for the best.

If you're using VLC 3.0.x and have video issues.
Try:

  1. Preferences -> Input/Codecs -> Disable hw decoding
  2. If you are a Windows user, Preferences -> Video -> Change from direct3d11 to direct3d9
If any solution works, please tell us which one solved your case, Please also quote your video driver name and version.
:!: If you want your problem to be solved :
* First read troubleshooting guide VSG:Main
* Always provide verbose LOGS ! (command line or from gui)
* Always check your issue against a developer build from Nightly Build of VLC
* Tell us when your problem is solved !

#1 worked for me, thanks!

Device manager tells me my driver is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 version 24.21.13.9907, dated 8/21/2018.

Hope that's useful.

The first solution worked for me as well. All freezing and stuttering ceased after setting HW acceleration to disabled.
Driver version is 25.21.14.1735 in device manager or 417.35 directly from the nvidia panel. I have a GTX980 in this system.

Well I need to also apply the second fix for certain files to play correctly.
Number 1 fixes an issue where the video stopped playing but audio still worked.
Number 2 fixes choppy playback on some files.

First solution worked for me. The problem seems to be in the driver, because even if vlc uses the hardware acceleration, the driver slow down the GPU frequency, causing the problem (tested with afterburner, gtx 980, drivers updated).
